Hoboken Revolt

The Hoboken Tax Reform Coalition

Hoboken Tax Reform Coalition is a great name. I was wondering when this group was going to go back to it's core foundation and start discussing the budget and how to reduce it by category. These are the types of entries I would come to expect of a website of this name.
If I was a New Hoboken resident and stumbled upon this site, I would think they would want to see active conversation in regard to the budget.

Would it be possible to take portions of the budget and open them up for discussion?

I would also be interested in discussing ways to enhance our budget and bring income producing ideas and concepts to the table to increase the city's budget.

With all the brain power that goes to this website, shouldn't we attempt to solve problems and create solutions?

Just a thought. We could create a master list of issues, ideas and pro-active solutions that are non-political and help the city by delivering our solutions.

Help Hoboken.

David - this was was discussed at a recent Revolt meeting. We hope to do exactly what you're suggesting as we head into the new budget cycle beginning January 1. I plan on contributing my own analysis and welcome any suggestions.
David:
1) Is the budget surplus $11.83mm as I, Mike Lenz and our auditor said? Is it $20mm as Beth Mason and Tim Occhipinti said? Less the the anticipated return of $1.83mm to taxpayer of course.
2) Should we concentrate on nickel and dimes (phones bills, etc-while important)? Or, should we concentrate on the 80% of budget: personal costs instead?
3) What $ or % surplus should we maintain to prudently finance our debt?
4)What $ reserve do we need to cover increases in healthcare, 2 years of retro pay for 7 unions + current year, lawsuits, 22% increase in mandated pension reserves, cuts in state aid, emergency repairs and tax appeals?
Potential voter fraud which threatens the sanctity of our voting system is also important isn't it?
My thoughts were to break down certain areas of the budget for conversations each month or week. Someone would post a portion of the budget and people would make comments and suggestions.
A pro-active approach to solving some problems and giving our government our recommendations.
Glad this is in the pipeline...good work.

This should be a really easy question to answer but my problem is, it always goes back to politics and jabs. Enough already. I will take what our paid BA says it is and go with that.

We should review it all. 80% or 20% doesn't matter, it is all our money. WE should examine each category on it's own.

3) What $ or % surplus should we maintain to prudently finance our debt?

I have always believed in having money for a rainy day. Not sure at this time the $ or %.

Hoboken needs all the money possible for future problems and lawsuits, so having money in the bank is a good thing.
There may have been a way for Mayor Zimmer to have gone to Trenton and asked for a exemption and requested more of a % back to tax payers. Five percent might have been higher if the Mayor requested. But that is old news and it is time to focus on 2011.
Scott I respect the fact that you are as aware of the topics as anyone and I am impressed that you go to all the meetings and blog in your name, but when my comments are about something completely different and you make it into something else..I have no time for that.
Stick with one issue at a time. There is enough press and blogging already about this issue that it doesn't need to be brought up at every chance.
There are other issues and one has nothing to do with the other.
Stay on topic!

David, you must be kidding about the voter fraud having nothing to do with the budget, right? You don't think that empty suit TO was put in place by the alleged illegal methods precisely to get the budget back under control, the control by the Russo clan that is?
David, didn't you support Cammarano last year? Why exactly are you here again? Once you associate your name with Cammarano's you loose any credibility, wouldn't you agree? I am highly suspicious of people like you and Ines/Garcia/Jonh Keim who supported Cammarano and now Tim Occhipinti.
Listen - I'll allow that anyone relatively new to town could have been taken in by Cammarano. I'll judge them by how they've conducted themselves since his arrest and plea.
It is sad to think that just because a way a person votes in the past is a 100% reflection on themselves as a person and that someone would question my comments due to how I voted in the past.
Very short sighted.
In my estimation, I have done more in the last 6 months for Hoboken then many who just complain and attack, so with that being said, I an entitled to be a part of this website and post whenever I like.
If Georgia has a problem with me personally, then come see me direct, rather then post nasty blog entries.

New to politics and getting involved in our town is new to me, but I have lived here the last 10 years and 3 years in the 90's. I enjoy living, working and being involved in Hoboken and I will not be stifled due to past votes or friendships with anyone in this town. I do what I like and feel is the right thing to do and every time "someone" bashes me about the past, I just ignore it and realize that people are small minded.
The past is the past, move on already. Everyone knows that I volunteered for Peter...old news.
Focus on the budget, instead of character assaults. Isn't this what the site is all about.
If Peter was still Mayor, I would be the same way...holding our elected officials accountable for the promises that were made. I heard 25% from Dawn Zimmer when she ran for office. Instead of attacking her on the budget outcome, I came to the source (Hoboken Revolt) to have civil conversations about reducing the city budget and increasing revenue for the city through a non-partisan website. Seems pretty pro-active to me!

Should have written - new to Hoboken OR Hoboken politics.
