Hoboken Revolt

The Hoboken Tax Reform Coalition

Hoboken Revolt applauds the Governor's office for releasing the Hoboken Police Department audit. This is a tremendous step in making our local government more transparent and accountable. You can read the full audit below.

It is excellent that this report has been made public. Reduction in force, increase in turning things over to civilian employees where possible, better management of vehicles and personnel to increase foot patrols all will improve Hobokens bottom line as will eliminating police supporting the bars for the St. Patricks annual mess and vomit events.

I would like to know where the fancy silverKawasaki bikes and special outfits and helmets for the police that they purchased several years ago are stored, along with the segues they bought and do not use and what was the cost of keeping those horses and the goat as well as vet bills, food bills and tranport bills are hidden. In addition I would like some clarity on our paying for their drunken rebels at Hooters. I resent that my hard earned money goes for such toys with no accountability. I would like one of those bikes, segues, motocycles, etc., for myself please or have they all been taken home by the police as their "right".

I would challenge anyone who says that crime will go up if we reduce the force. I would like to know where the heck these officers are. You can walk up Washington from top to bottom and never see a single cop. The only place you can see them is doubled parked outside Benny Tudino's or Vito's. You can get killed getting off a bus because of all the double parked cars and yet no one gets a ticket. They love the St. Pat's parade. Its the only day that they might really have to work, but wait, the department makes about $85,000 that day in overtime. Stop the gravy train, stop the entitlement and start paying attention to the taxpayer.
Is there any effort to push the city council and mayor to follow up on the audits recommendations? I do not expect them to fire 50 cops tomorrow but they cannot ignore the findings. I am appalled that the police chief wants to hire more cops and that our public safety director has not taken the time to read the entire report. (see http://hoboken.patch.com/articles/police-chief-falco-i-will-ask-for...).

Based on the reports recommendations and Alicea's lackluster performance in the budget hearings, is there any reason that the mayor is keeping him on? I heard rumors that Councilman Lenz has a deal with him - he keeps his job and supports lenz for the 4th ward - but this choice is soley the mayors. He is an at will employee (no police union to protect him) and a carryover from the wonderful cammarano administration. If we are going to fire police who, for the most part, do their jobs, how can she keep on someone who does nothing simply to get votes for one of her councilmen?
From what I've heard, you can expect there to be some squaring off over this and initial digging in to respective positions. Last night, Councilman Lenz called and Mile Square View posted the story related to this.

"Police Chief Falco: I Will Ask For More Personnel

Although Police Chief Anthony Falco had not yet read the state's audit of the Hoboken Police Department on Monday night, ..."

Is this guy for real?! The highest police official did not find the time to read the long-awaited HPD audit report yet calls for more personnel?! How long will it take him until he finds the time to read the report on his department? Will he still call for more personnel then?
Notice how there was no committment to do anything in his statement. He uses many vague words but if you are going to talk about it, committ to do something. He did nothing. The recommendation to eliminate the position of the public safety director is the simplest and least controversial one in the whole document. Lenz's avoidance of that recommendation, given Alicea's sad performance at the budget meetings and his carryover status, raises red flags.

Can you offer another explaination for his weak response?

Also - has anyone heard anything from the rest of the council? Lenz made what I thought was a very weak public statement of the audit so I commented on that.

Peter,

I agree with your comments. A professional, independent body has examined Hoboken and determined how many officers we need. In my mind, that is how many we should have. There is no evidence to support any other number other than the numbers in the audit.

Whatever can be saved in negotiations will be a pittance compared to the extra money that is basically being dumped by the suitcase into the Hudson river in paying extra people huge compensation packages that the city does not need.

IF any of the council members are serious about cuts, they should address this immediately.

All 9 of them have talked the talk at some point in the last year and a half since the huge tax increase. Lets see who walks the walk.

What about other areas for staff cuts? The one time I've visited the city hall to get a parking permit, the employees there were very rude and could hardly be bothered to help me.
Could similar audit be done on other areas?
I think the audit is incidental. The city needs to shrink its role in our lives- look at the addition of a taxi dispatcher. If you cannot figure out how to catch a cab, or how to deal with sharing a cab, tough luck.

I call the Police audit the final "great awakening". I repeat; it is time for action. This report puts the final nail in the "do nothing" governance we have seen.
The Mayor and the Council have to act NOW; the nation, the state and this city are all broke. You cannot get blood out of a stone. It is time for the too long awaited cuts!
To all responding to this, consider attending next week's city council meeting on Wednesday. The public portion of the meeting is a good place to make sure that the elected officials understand that we demand action.

Like I said, if one did a google search, it would be easy to find quotes from each council member stating that they have pledged to reign in taxes. It is time for them to walk the walk. Talk is cheap.
