Hoboken Revolt

The Hoboken Tax Reform Coalition

Fernanda Patterson

Had Enough of the St Pat's Day Debauchary? Call the Mayor.

As stated last January, the Mayor will be meeting with department and committee heads to discuss what should be done about this $100,000.00+ party for out of towners which is paid for by the taxpayers.  If you think it was less rowdy this year, read the hospital report.

I called for an end to this charade! Ask your council rep for an itemized bill for St. Patrick! Let's see how much we have to pay in order to arrange for our family to flee the city for the weekend!
While last Saturday's mess was a bit contained by police's presence, it is unacceptable that we, the taxpayers, pay for it, and then are abused by the drunkards!
I disagree completely. The St. Patty's celebration is one of the events that puts Hoboken on the map, and anything to grab dollars that our residents usually spend in NYC is a good thing. I know it sucks if you live on Washington or Newark, but you did choose to live on the same street as most of the bars in town. Last year $400k in fines were handed out, let's see what the total is this year before we rush to judgment. I've already heard of 2 $3K house party fines from random elevator conversations, so I think the cops made some money.

However, here are two changes I'd like to see. If we allow the bars to open at 9am, charge them for the privilege. The city should have had the bars apply for the early opening, and charged them some amount ($1K?). Also, the fact that the city doesn't charge the bars some fee for St. Patty's is a disgrace. Many bars were charging $20-30 cover, since they know they'll be packed. Why doesn't the town take 30% of the cover charge?
Do you not pay taxes? Do you know that the bill is handed out to the taxpayers?
Why should we have a minority (bar owners) terrorize a majority (people who pay taxes and choose to leave the town for the entire weekend)?
I do not see a single reason to allow this non-sense. The administration should at least make an attempt to defer the cost of this parade to those business that profit from it!

St Pat's? put Hoboken on the Map? More Like St Path's Train!
St. Patrick's event gives the Irish people such a bad name in Hoboken. The drunk kids running around the town aimlessly looking for hot boys and girls did not look too Irish to me!
