Hoboken Revolt

The Hoboken Tax Reform Coalition

Did anyone notice how two at large city councilmen were unable to vote on any issue without first glancing at Zimmer?? I did and that is very disturbing. How are we going to do things correctly when two of the people that were voted into office recently cant even make a decision before checking if its ok. I hope this is not a trend. As far as the council attempting to take the zoning board power from the mayor, I understand the reasoning behind the action but the timing was terrible. It stinks of "Hidden Agenda". If the council is already trying to start a political tug-o-war nothing is ever going to get done and that's the bottom line. REMINDER! Don't believe everything you hear or see, behind closed doors you'd be surprised what alliances are consummated.

I do hope that the new people will do the right thing, nevertheless, we have to monitor their moves.
the intent and purpose of Mello's proposed ordinance is good. The zoning board must be brought under control. No longer can a rogue zoning board be the reason that we must declare redevelopment zone after redevelopment zone. However, Mello, as green and inexperienced as he is, should have waited to put forward such an ordinance...
I was disgusted at the actions of the council at the first meeting. What a joke. What bad timing and what a mess that first meeting was. They spent more time arguing about when to schedule the next meeting/s and whether they should advertise online then they did about a big issue like taking power away from the Mayor. I for one think it is a BAD thing to do if you can’t even run a meeting or decide on the when the next meeting should be….how the hell are they going to make a decision on who will be on the Zoning Board???? Grant it was the first meeting but I for one have no confidence in Zimmer and her crew that they will be able to make any good decision let alone a decision at all.
Oh, I think they could make a decision just fine - they do NOT want 411 being included for official online public notices, they want enough lead time to vet PC's director appointments and they want the city council to appoint members to the zoning board instead of leaving it in the hands of one person (a power grab that A. Russo made years ago and one that should be righted.)

Personally, I didn't necessarily agree with the timing of everything and I think Mason was right to point out that they really hadn't demonstrated a legitimate reason to move the meeting date to later in the month.....but what happened to your "let's give it a chance" (fake) attitude?

I dont understand why the switch of power to appoint the zoning board from mayor back to council is even controversial at all.

Up until the 90s, this had always been one by the council. We've now tried to vest this power with the Mayor, and it hasn't worked.

There is simply no reason to have this variance from the normal way the Mayor/Council government is run (with the council making these decisions). It shouldn't have been switched in the first place in the 90s, and should be corrected asap. If Joe Carro's reasons are the best reasons (because he thinks Council is ineffective at making decisions), that only reinforces that this is about 10 years too late.

If Cammarano disagrees, he can feel free to exercise his power and veto the council's resolution.

Well, Joe, while you apparently were disgusted about the last city council meeting, I bet you that most here, myself definitely included, took great joy in seeing that the newly elected reform city council majority seems to be intent on doing exactly what we elected them for, namely clip Cammarano's wings enough so that he cannot extend the damage that his two predecessors have inflicted onto this city. Returning the right to appoint the zoning board members to the council is precisely what needs to happen. After all, the city council is the redevelopment agent, not the mayor. More specifically for this particular mayor, separating him from the power to appoint the zoning board members removes the temptation for him to abuse his power by appointing individuals whom he might owe favors after having his election campaign financed by all sorts of powers associated with overdevelopment. Stripping him of this particular power removes one possible conflict of interest.

So, Joe, while you considered the last city council meeting a joke, I think it was just right down to business - reform business that is. And I certainly hope that we will see more of it in the next meetings - a lot more in fact. So, don't worry that they won't be able to make any decisions. They will. Based on your prior postings here, I am just afraid that you might simply not like those decisions...
Let’s be clear..nothing about Dawn, Mello, Marsh, Cunningham and Bhalla is REFORM. I assume you did not watch the meeting from July 1st as it was an example of people not knowing what they were doing. I don’t have an issue if a council wants to take control of a zoning board. My personal feeling are that I would not trust Dawn and her crew to appoint people on the zoning board (or for that matter any position) that would know what they are doing. Aside from my personal views, I thought it was in extremely poor taste that Mello, on his first day, would put something forward like this without having a clue. You could totally tell this was straight from the backroom meetings of what “they” would do to try and send a message on day one. It is backfiring if you have not followed.

It is a sneak peak of what your “reformers” are going to do over the next 2 years. Classless and clueless. Maybe Dawn and her reformer rat pack can decide when to hold the next meeting…that only took about a half hour at the meeting. They spent more time on that then they did on this issue that should have been sent to committee, discussed and voted on at the next meeting. I hope MAYOR Cammarano veto’s this. Also, how many times did Dawn have to say “I want a committee to look into Peter appointments”? We get it Dawn…you want to hold up every appointment and hold up the city from getting to work. You have made it clear you will not be a council person in 2 years!
Exactly. I read a bunch of posts on NJ.com where people were up in arms about the new city council. It seems that the complaints are just from those who don't like the decisions being made. This power sharing may actually be the best thing that ever happened to this city. Guess both sides will need to reach across the isle as they say to get things done.

One of Dave Mello's concentration was land use in law school. If my notes are correct he referred to this at the only city council debate.

Dawn made a campaign promise to ensure the apointment of qualifed individuals to the city departments. She can still make good. If she tries to shoot down competent professional candidates then you should complain, until then wait and see.

To anticipate a little, the two issues are different. The first is to reform a system, the zoning board appointments, that is broken. The second is simply doing a thorough job on something the council has always done, approving department heads.

Joe,
I have a feeling that you will remain 'disgusted' for a while, as your mayor will be a weak one for the next 2 years.
Cheers to the new council!
Two years??.......funny....I'm getting the feeling I'm not the only that feels that two years from now certain individuals will not be in office any longer. Its tough when you no longer hold any presence within your ward. Well, it was fun while it lasted I guess.............

yeah, Petey Boy probably thinks he'll be a state senator in two years and no longer the mayor of Hoboken.
