Hoboken Revolt

The Hoboken Tax Reform Coalition

VERY IMPORTANT CITY COUNCIL MEETING THIS WEDNESDAY MARCH 17th 7PM CITY HALL!

The City Council will be voting on the proposed terms of the Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) for the PBA and PSOA Police contracts THIS
Wednesday at 7pm at City Hall
.  Details of the contracts can be found
on the city site or by clicking on the links below.  We respect the
hard work of our local public safety officials, but it is our opinion
that Hoboken can not afford to pay the raise increases the union is
seeking.  The 2009 audit of the Hoboken Police Department and state commissioned
investigation titled "The Beat Goes On" are proof that major reform is
necessary!  Voting NO on these contracts is the first step.

We encourage ALL members of Hoboken Revolt to attend this Wednesday's council meeting and demand these contracts be voted down!
Many of you feel strongly about real reform and tax cuts and it is
important to be at the meeting, rather than watching the proceedings on
TV or Online at home.  We need a big attendance on Wednesday night to show the
council, the cameras, the media and Governor Christie that the
taxpayers of Hoboken want action now.
Love Your Town.  Be Present.  Come to the meeting!

I think we should insist on the City implementing the audit findings. What is the point in spending money on audits and forensic accountants if you lack the will to follow through.

The Council has the audit. The council should reply to the unions with an amended offer with all of the contract related findings. Otherwise, they are just wasting our money on the unions and then rubbing it in by telling us exactly how much they wasted.
If people are willing to look at the audit's information rationally they will find that it has a tremendous amount of flaws. The auditor didn't even take the time to ensure his population statistics were correct. That item alone should render this audit useless but add to it the fact that he did not account for transient traffic, believes Hoboken borders secaucus, he didn't have the department's scheduling correct and you have a big waste of time and money on paper. Its unfortunate but its true. In the end, people want cuts despite what other non-monetary items they will lose including the safety of this town. The police department is not without its own "bad apples" but it is what makes this town great. It is not the waterfront, parks or restaurants. It's the police department because without them this town would not be safe enough to walk through parks and around your waterfront. Hoboken is not allergic to crime, Jersey City, Union City and Weehawken all border this town and each of those cities have their own issues with crime and gang activity. Is Hoboken so nieve to believe that crime and gangs don't enter its boundaries because its "Hoboken"? Sad but true.

Yep, all my friends who moved to Hoboken said they did it because of the outstanding police force. (NOT)

No one is saying the police audit is a perfect document, but it certainly is a very valid place to start when evaluating the police needs of the community. The methodology is sound, even if the population statistics are somewhat behind the times. Hoboken certainly could use the updated 2008 estimates in lieu of the 2000 census numbers, but there's no reason to wait for the 2010 census to be completed.

No one is claiming Hoboken is immune to crime or doesn't need a police force. All that most are claiming, and rightly so with the findings in the audit, is that the police force we have is overstaffed (especially at the administrative levels) and aren't being very efficient in the way they conduct their business (including the maintenance of vehicles, etc.).

Anecdotal evidence posted on this site and others also indicates that Hoboken PD (again, especially at the administrative levels) are grossly overcompensated with regards to both pay and benefits.

The issue is not that we want to get rid of police, but not to have more police than the town can afford. The overly large, overly compensated staff cannot be maintained. The PD needs to streamline, be more efficient, and do more with less. Just like everyone else in this economy.
