Hoboken Revolt

The Hoboken Tax Reform Coalition

With the new results from the Census Bureau in hand, one could wonder whether the mayor will swallow her pride and accept the fact that she was wrong for standing by the ridiculous audit on our police department. It was flawed from the start because it was based on inaccurate population statistics but yet she continued forward with her strong beleif in the auditor's "formula". Well my question is, if we use the same sacred formula but plug in the new numbers, a "30% increase", should we then replace the officers the Mayor has "gotten to retire"? One would assume that would be the case but then again one should never assume when it comes to "Politics in Hoboken".

To answer your question, most likely there is no need to hire any new officers according to what you call the "sacred formula". If you recall, the audit had suggested reducing the HPD to between 102 and 112, and I don't think that the retirements and redeployment brought Hoboken to anywhere near those numbers.
Staffing should be based on number and type of crimes. 99% of the new residents are peaceful, law abiding citizens. People in Sky Club/Line, Maxwell and Shipyard (per ex Mayor Roberts) are not career criminals, except for a pol or two.
Wow i guess you don't go out on thursday, fri, and sat nights. Listen to the scanner at 12am when they caal into service and you will hear that there are only still six to seven cops patrolling the city.  This mayor's ignorance is jepordizing the safety of the residence. I think 15 cops retired on november and december, and I dont see any cops hired to replace them.  There are not enough walking around because they are too busy with the drunks. Now with fifty thousand plus people,  then add the commuters, and the drunks on the weekends, and less cops, great job zimmer. Oh and the police are in arbitration with the city for a union contract, and wont they be delighted to hear the census number. Zimmer ran tripodi out of hear after she made that deal with the union. Then the zimmer croanies voted down that contract at the council meeting. All the unions are going to follow suit and take the city to the banks for a union contract they have not had in nearly four years. Great job Zimmer.

Some facts - well known to realhobokenyuppie - BEFORE the mayor forced the police department to redeploy, there were only 6-7 police officers on patrol.  Now there is a substantially larger patrol bureau and a power shift, meaning realhobokenyuppie is not telling the truth about how many officers patrol our streets on friday and saturday nights.  He and Dave also knows that the police audit did not base ANY of its analysis on population, so the new census #'s have no effect on its findings. If you can't base your arguments on the truth, boys, perhaps you should reconsider the wisdom of engaging on these subjects.

First Off my name is RealhobokenNONyuppie..its called a scanner..listen at midnight, and let me know how many cops call into service, the power shift is three cops in the housing authority, and they don't leave the housing area to patrol the rest of the city.  . Check out page 7 of the audit....talks clearly about the population...there is supposed to be so many cops per thousand people.

Actually its based on calls for service, and I think Hoboken poloice was over 70 thousand calls for service last year. Like i said, u must not get out, or away from Maxwell or skyclub snob buildings. I guess you like to mention a few times stating that you  are such a law abiding citizen from those posh buildings. There is a real world outside your condo, and be carful, u might get alot of nosebleeds from keeping it so high...Shim

Nowhere in your post do you state how many officers were on patrol on a friday night before Zimmer's redeployment plan was implemented vs. how many are on patrol now.  Zimmer increased patrol on friday nights through a "power shift," making your insinuation that there are fewer cops on patrol now than then an intentionally untrue statement (I'm being polite).  Calling me names doesn't refute that, but it does make it seem that a conversation involving true facts is not to your liking.  Too bad - I've always been a supporter of maintaining a substantial police street presence so honest coherent arguments could get me to agree with you.  But your credibility now needs some substantial rehabilitation, at least with me.  And I read page 7 of the audit and it doesn't say a higher population equates to a need for more police.  That's another untruth. Quite the contrary, the audit makes clear that force size does not directly correlate to population size.  Based on calls for service the audit recommended the force be reduced by about 50.  You should be complimenting Zimmer for using good judgment and cutting far more modestly while avoiding layoffs entirely.    That's a result that that benefited both the city and our fine young police officers.
Chief Falco signed off on the redeployment. What do you think of him?
